This die features the Old Norse God Odin as the Wanderer with a surrounding border.

Widely worshiped by the Germanic peoples of the Middle Ages, Odin, furious lord of ecstasy and inspiration, was the highest of deities and the chief of the Aesir tribe of gods and goddesses. Known as “all-father,” among many other epithets, Odin was usually depicted with one eye and a long beard. He would often be accompanied by his familiars, the wolves Geri and Freki, and ravens Huminn and Muninn, and rode an eight-legged horse named Sleipnir. Befitting his kingly stature, Odin was also a mighty warrior, it was said that he never lost a battle; there were even some who believed he could not lose a battle.

Despite his military prowess, Odin defied many conventions of the warrior-king archetype so highly idealized by the Norse. While Odin kept his court at Asgard, one of the nine realms in Norse mythology, he preferred to wander in the guise of a traveler. He sought knowledge above all else, of his enemies and the future, and courted shamans, seers, and necromancers in order to attain it. He spoke in poetry and riddles and commanded beasts, even taking their forms upon occasion. Though hero gods, such as the mighty Thor, fought with brute strength and bravado, the trickster god Odin dismissed these tools in favor of craft and cunning.

The die shows Odin holding the spear Gungnir, which means ‘swaying’ in Old Norse and was made by the dwarves, the master craftsmen of Norse mythology. According to one story, the dwarves made the spear for Odin specially, and forged it from sunlight.

This die measures 3" X 3" and features a pendant with four optional hanging loops and a pair of earrings also with two optional hanging loops.

The pendant is just under 1-3/64" wide and 1-9/64" tall excluding the hanging loops.

The earrings are  just over 7/8" wide and 1" tall excluding the hanging loops.

The hanging loops allow for the following options:

1) Cut all of the loops off and add your own jump rings.

2) Cut the side and bottom loops off and just use the top loop to make a pendant or add earwires for earrings.

3) Cut the top and bottom loops off and use the side loops to connect several components together with jump rings to make a bracelet.

4) Cut the top and bottom loops off and use the side loops and attach a leather strap to make a bracelet.

5) Cut the side loops off and use the top loop to add a jump ring to attach a chain or add earwires for earrings.  Use the bottom loop to hang a bead or stone.

The earring components feature mirrored images.

This Rolling Mill Component Die is a mild tool steel die that can be used in a rolling mill that can accommodate 3" wide by 1/8” thick material plus your metal and craft foam.  The designs can be used for making earrings, pendants, and other smaller sized components.

These Rolling Mill Component Dies are for rolling mill use only. We tested them with a hydraulic press and we were able to get impressions. However, we also found that after the first couple of pressings the plates became dented. This happened because the type of tool steel necessary for use in a rolling mill is softer than the type of steel used in a hydraulic press.

Some of our dies will have an arrow to show the direction that the die should be fed through your rolling mill. The reason we mark certain dies is due to the fact that as the die and metal is pressed it stretches slightly which can slightly deform designs that have round elements or borders. To account for the stretch, we slightly shorten those designs so they will be closer to the right dimensions once pressed.

Your die will arrive lightly oiled with a lubricant called CorrosionX.  It can be found at most auto supply stores.  We highly recommend you use it or some kind of machine oil to protect your investment, especially if you live in a humid climate.  We use it to keep rust from forming on our steel pieces, dies, rolling mill rollers and other tools.  It also helps your silver or copper release from the die.

When you first set you rolling mill rollers, take your die and place a piece of dead soft copper on top of it.  We have found that 20-gauge and 18-gauge copper works best.  Then, place a piece of craft foam on top of your metal.  Place them into the opened rollers of your mill and gently close your rollers until they touch the top of your die, metal, and foam sandwich.  Try rolling your die at that setting first to see if you get an impression.  If you do not get a good impression, adjust your rollers tighter and test again.  Rolling too tightly could damage your die or cause your die to form a drastic curve, so be careful to tighten in small increments.

You can find the craft foam on Amazon - search for Darice 2mm Foamie Roll, 36-inch by 60-inch, black.
